The True Life Legend of Norman T. Brooks

and His Traveling Family

A testimonial from someone with me a long time…

SUMMARY:  This is the story of a group of people who have continually strived to find that elusive formula for “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” beginning in 1968 and continuing to the present time. It began with one black man who had a dream; and because of that dream began to meet people and collect his working team.

This is a story of a man named Brooks who in 1968 began to meet people of all kinds and from all walks of life. As he traveled this young man (only 25 at the time) would talk to anybody and everybody he thought he might be able to work with and tell them about his dream. This was a dream of helping people who truly needed his help. As the group progressed through time, many people passed through and on to do other things with their lives. The door has always been open. No one has ever been forced to stay. As the group built they started to travel because the people in the area where they were did not understand nor did they want to know about this group of young people who would move and travel together. This story is from the point of view of a member of the Brooks’ Corporate Family who was introduced to the family in August of 1972.

Many times over the years this group had to deal with authorities, loggers, police, sheriffs, detectives, children’s protective services, and the general public; (all at different times and some over and over ) repressing, impeding, their “unalienable rights” of “Life Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” (Brooks D. A., 2010)

Here is a small example of the types of things this group was forced by circumstances to go through, and yet they are still together and still pursuing their dream of Life-living on Maui; Liberty-have finally found a place where they can do what they are happy doing; and the Pursuit of Happiness-what makes this group happy is working with and on the land in an environmentally and ecologically manner that is to the benefit of anyone who is fortunate enough to cross their paths.

One member joined the group in august of 1972. She was a 19 year old single mother who had just become homeless and she and her daughter desperately needed a place to be. There was already an established group at that time what were living in California and helping young people who were in trouble. They were working in the community, renting a house and presenting as responsible young adults. Shortly after joining there was an issue of violence in the neighborhood and because the group had young children with them it was decided they would move.

The group got into cars and traveled to another state to explore and find a place to be where people would just leave them alone to live the way they had chosen to live. The cars broke down and the group was left on the road on foot in a small town on the edge of the forest. The people in town told the group they could not stay in town because they were too big a group. Here it was already September and snows would start by end of October. The only choice to survive through winter, which was coming with all the snow and ice, was to build their own cabin. The group started to fell trees and trim them out to build a cabin for them to survive the upcoming winter.

When spring came, the people of the town came to the cabin with coroner, fire department, ministers, police and forensic investigators to “clear out the bodies”. (Coroner, 1973) Instead when they surrounded the cabin amidst full regalia of SWAT, they found not bodies, but smiling young people with sooty faces from the fire smoke that kept them warm through the winter. They were healthy and well after surviving the worst winter in history for that part of the country.

From the cabin the group decided to go into town for a while in order to work and build up a budget for things that would be needed by the children. This started 2 years of extreme persecution, prejudice, and death threats. People did not understand, were afraid, and were too proud to find out the reality of this group of people who really were not doing anything but working and living together for the benefit of everyone in the group. During this 2 years, this group endured SWAT raids 5 times. Each of these SWAT raids was cause for the group’s children to be removed from the family and placed in foster care.

Also each time the issue was brought to court with psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors, behavioral specialists and other professional witnesses, the children were returned because they were determined to be in a healthy, happy environment that was the best for them at that time and it worked. The last time the children were removed was due to an unfortunate incident that was unavoidable.

Every time this group of people came to a new place they would disperse throughout the community to find work. Then each time the head of the family picked someone up from work, that worker would lose their job for being white women associated with a black man. This group was hampered at every turn from pursuing their right to happiness. Still to this day here on Maui they continue to strive for those rights. Many of the members were “at the end of their rope” when they were introduced to the group. Some were taking drugs, some were working the street life and at rock bottom, and some just did not have any place to go so were given a place to stay and food in exchange for helping do the work that was needed. This group has saved the lives of this member and many other young people throughout the years by giving them a place to belong, and positive values and role models.

Now in 2010 they still strive for happiness by working to develop a 5 ½ acre property on Maui where they have grown numerous children and continue to grow fruit trees, fish, vegetables, and flowers. Many of them are grandmothers and many of them are way up in age; and still they continue to create beauty on the land that they have found peace on for the past 34 years. Maui has continued to let us have our peace and quiet.”
They will leave their mark on Maui in the form of a fresh water holding system that will benefit many future generations as long as it remains taken care of.

Mr. Brooks has this to say:
“Even though the majority of the ones that are here now are senior citizens and up in age we are still creating beauty with the land and more and more fruit trees and other trees are growing beautifully by the hands of this working family, as a family, as a team.” — Brooks Family, 2010

The Picture that Goes with The Story

This is a painting that was commissioned to showcase the events that happened during my life and travels over the years. It goes along with the previous posting.

A Way of Life that Worked that many other people could never live. A True Story put in pictures in detail of a time that went by.

Left top corner when I started serving food on Laguna Beach in 1968. I had legal permission; I had a permit to have a fire on the beach. In the middle of feeding over 100 people, officers came down and said I could not feed anyone anymore. In this time I met a fantastic lady who agreed to travel with me on a real journey of life, and this begun our life story. We traveled down south and back up north where we set up tents beside the Rogue River outside Medford Oregon. I immediately went and got a job at the Medford hotel where I was truly enjoying meeting the people of that area. On to meet other people. Spent some time in jail for “Contributing to a mother on welfare”; I bought her children something for Christmas and I was told I could not do that. So my journey moved farther across the country as I met many many people; good kind gentle people. Except, there were a few that I put them for what they really were, prejudiced. So I moved on. I done everything I could to keep from having any types of conflict with anyone, and I made lots of friends. Still, a lot of them could not travel as I had to continue on my travels.

I met up with a beautiful person that had joined up with our group. From what we knew this person was of age to travel and become a part of our group. It turns out this person was not, and I done time for that. When that time was over, the journey continued on. As we a few people that had united together, were traveling along coast highway 1 after we past crescent city we split up into two parts and went to Port Angeles Washington.

We opened up an arts and crafts shop in a barn that we had been given to live in during 1971. That shop got burned down and we were forced to walk away. Our journey went through a whole lot of changes when we went through our travels, which would take a whole book to talk about.

We lived comfortably there for a long time, (we spent the coldest winter in recorded history for that area in that cabin). They come looking for us in the spring with ambulances expecting to find us dead. After that we were forced to move into town again and in the process opened a chain of three restaurants under the name of “Lighter Brown Darker Brown”, and a children’s TV program that showed movies of history and of different landscapes around the world. I even made “Man of the Year” for 1973. Still this was not enough to make people just let us alone to live the way we wanted to live without harming anyone. Again, the disgruntled people that were with me caused a whole lot of things to happen in that time. After our restaurants were closed, TV program taken away from us, we moved from Eugene into the mountains again. This time we created a whole mountain side where we made our second homestead markings. It was comfortable. We dug caves deep into the ground so we would be able to survive the winters that were coming through those woods. We had citizens band antennas hooked up all over the place so we could communicate with the outside world for safety measures. A statue was carved symbolizing that we were the ones that were homesteading that area. I decided to leave to pursue a job in Seattle Washington and let everyone know that I was coming back soon. I come back and all the mothers and my children were gone with only a couple people to tell me where they were.

Along the road we ended up in Eugene where we lived in another barn during 1972. We left Eugene and went to a California beach called Leo Carrillo where I delivered my oldest daughter. From there we ended up in a house On the Venice Canals in California; where many people started coming in when we got comfortable in a house. This was still only August of 1972. From there we moved back to Oregon again and homesteaded a piece of BLM land by clearing a site and building a cabin by hand.

After finding out where they were I got in touch with a court official I knew at the time and all that person said was they had no right to take them. They gave them back to us. That was in 1974, and the journey continued. After spending several months in Springfield Oregon so we could visit the children when they let us. We moved on to the mountains again.

As we rode on the way to Blue River Oregon, the van tire was shot out. We continued on driving until wee reached a point on the dirt rode until we could go no higher. Everybody walked up to the top of the hill where we set up camp until the next morning. Things happened that could not be avoided. There is really no discussion any more. Just that things happened that could not be avoided. After doing 5 years for hindering prosecution, I was set free with time served. They said time was served and I had no reason that I had to stay around in Oregon.

I caught a plane, came to Maui, got driven home, and said “Thank you God.” I didn’t have to endure any more of that craziness that went on in that time period. Then I find that someone has published false statements about my trial and it is making it hard for my business to advance forward. The reason that I want to put this much of my story out is because I would like for it to be stopped; where someone keeps bringing my name up falsely about things that never happened. This part of the story is only to express that we have always been a family successfully work together and have created a fantastic life that many people could never ever have lived.

Developing the property by hand.

Then life started on a different path. Of raising children, delivering and raising children, working on each one of the ponds we have designed to hold fresh water, and still doing our best to stay out of other peoples business and face with our life. Because we feel that we are a few of the lucky ones that were able to make our life we chose work for us as it has for 42 years. Then life started on a different path. Then our life took another turn. In the year of 1994 the majority of my kids that were still left at home with me were taken away, never to be returned again, because of disgruntled people. Now all of my children are grown, they say that my oldest, 37 year old son was so distraught that he committed suicide. But still our life as a family, as a team has moved forward on and on and now we attempt to let the world know, we are just people who believe different than a lot of other people believe. Happy Life to everyone, and truly don’t think about tomorrow, don’t think about yesterday, think about right now and what you can do to make everything better in this right now. Still our journeys are journeys that we took. Now we are all senior citizens saying, “Let your journeys be enjoyable no matter what. Always remember the more you help, really truly help those that have had disaster, those that have had floods, earthquakes and tornados, and those that are in need of help in lots of ways, the more your journey will be easier for you to travel your destiny with a smile. Now I hope no one take my story as a sympathy ploy or a woe is me ploy like most people do when they need help. My story is just something to pass time while I continue to create this spectacular business that will give a lot of people a lot of jobs. I have a plan, a plan that I have no doubt will work. Now I think I took up a lot of your time with my whole history catalogue of my life and many others lives. Still I hope you do not let this deter you from checking out some of my wall pictures and buying some of them so that I will be able to create the most spectacular fish farm anyone has ever seen and fresh water holding system with new technology. There was insecurity jealousy, and disgruntled beings that took over the people that had been with me 25 years and more and caused us to be raided again.
